Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the purpose, audience and required format of a writing prompt.
  • Plan and organise ideas using a paragraph outline.
  • Apply a range of language features (vivid vocabulary, varied sentence structures, figurative language) to produce clear, effective, imaginative writing.
  • Edit writing for spelling, punctuation and grammar accuracy.
  • Evaluate own work against the IGCSE checklist and give constructive peer feedback.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed planning worksheet and checklist handouts
  • Sample model answer handout
  • Photographs (or printed images) for descriptive task
  • Timer
Introduction:

Begin with a short video clip of a vivid description and ask students what makes it engaging. Recall the previous lesson on paragraph structure and link it to today’s focus on planning and language features. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to produce writing that meets the IGCSE criteria for clarity, effectiveness and imagination.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write a 50‑word descriptive paragraph from a provided photograph.
  2. Mini‑lesson (10'): Teacher reviews the planning process, structure of effective writing, and key language features.
  3. Guided practice (15'): Whole class creates a paragraph plan for a persuasive letter using the worksheet.
  4. Independent writing (20'): Students write the persuasive letter, incorporating at least two language features.
  5. Peer review (10'): Pairs exchange drafts, use the checklist to give feedback and suggest improvements.
  6. Whole‑class feedback & proofread (5'): Teacher highlights common errors; students make final edits.
Conclusion:

Summarise how planning, structure and language features combine to create clear, effective, imaginative writing. For the exit ticket, each student writes one sentence describing the most useful tip they will apply in the exam. Assign homework: choose a different genre (narrative, descriptive, or expository) and produce a 150‑word piece using the same planning checklist.
