Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Measuring and/or marking out from working drawings and using tools and methods appropriate to the materials.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Interpret working drawings to extract dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications.
  • Accurately measure and mark out workpieces using appropriate tools for wood, metal, plastics, and composites.
  • Select and justify suitable processing methods for each material and stage of production.
  • Demonstrate safe handling of tools and verify final dimensions against the drawing.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for drawing display
  • Printed working drawing of a metal bracket
  • Vernier calipers, steel rule, tape measure
  • Scribes, centre punches, layout dye, pencils
  • Clamps and bench vise
  • Safety goggles, gloves, hearing protection
Introduction:

Begin with a brief video showing a technician marking out a metal component, prompting students to consider why precise measurement matters. Review prior knowledge of basic ruler use and safety procedures. Explain that today’s success criteria are to correctly interpret a drawing, transfer dimensions within tolerance, and justify tool choices.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on drawing symbols and tolerances.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of the workflow from drawing interpretation to inspection, highlighting key measurement tools.
  3. Demonstration (15'): Teacher models measuring and marking out the sample metal bracket using calipers, scribe, and layout dye.
  4. Guided practice (20'): Students work in pairs to interpret a provided drawing and mark out their own workpiece while the teacher circulates for feedback.
  5. Check for understanding (5'): Whole‑class review of marked dimensions, discussing common errors and safety checks.
  6. Reflection & planning (5'): Students record selected tools and justify their choices in a worksheet before proceeding.
Conclusion:

Recap the importance of accurate measurement and tool selection in achieving design intent. Students complete an exit ticket describing one improvement they would make to their marking‑out process. Assign homework to research a different material’s preferred marking tools and prepare a short summary.
