Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: why businesses may respond to environmental issues, e.g. improved reputation, increased sales
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key reasons businesses respond to environmental issues (reputation, sales, cost savings, legal compliance, competitive advantage, funding).
  • Explain how common business responses (eco‑friendly packaging, waste‑reduction programmes, renewable energy, durable product design, green marketing) address those reasons.
  • Analyse real‑world examples to link environmental actions with specific business benefits.
  • Evaluate the strategic value of environmental responsibility for a firm’s competitive position.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slide presentation
  • Printed case‑study worksheets (table of reasons, benefits, examples)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Kahoot/Quizlet access for quick quiz
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a 1‑minute video clip showing a brand’s “green” campaign to hook interest. Ask students to share any recent eco‑friendly products they have noticed, linking to prior knowledge of marketing. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify why businesses act on environmental issues and how those actions create value.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Think‑pair‑share: “What does ‘green’ mean for a business?” Collect a few responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the six reasons businesses respond, using slides and brief real‑world examples.
  3. Group activity (15’) – In small groups, analyse the provided case‑study table; match each reason with its business benefit and complete the worksheet.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10’) – Groups share findings; teacher highlights strategic links and clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Interactive quiz (5’) – Kahoot quiz to check understanding of key concepts.
Conclusion:

Summarise how environmental actions can improve reputation, boost sales, and provide other tangible benefits. Students complete an exit ticket stating one way a business could turn an environmental issue into a competitive advantage. Assign homework: research a local company’s sustainability initiative and prepare a short paragraph on the business benefits observed.
