Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Year 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: The elements of the marketing mix (4Ps): price, product, promotion, place.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe each of the 4 Ps and their role in the marketing mix.
  • Analyse how product features, pricing strategies, promotional tactics and distribution channels interact.
  • Apply the 4‑P framework to develop a basic marketing plan for a chosen product.
  • Evaluate the impact of the 4 Ps on business objectives such as profit, market share and brand image.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck summarising the 4 Ps
  • Printed worksheet with a product case study
  • Markers and flip chart
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What product would you buy today and why?” This taps into students’ existing product knowledge. Review the concept of a marketing mix from previous lessons and set the success criteria: students will be able to identify and explain each of the 4 Ps and use them to design a simple marketing plan.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three everyday products and discuss which of the 4 Ps they think is most critical for each.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Teacher presents the 4 Ps using slides and real‑world examples (e.g., smartphones, sportswear).
  3. Guided analysis (15’) – In pairs, students examine the smartwatch case study, identifying decisions for Product, Price, Promotion and Place.
  4. Group activity (15’) – Teams create a brief 4‑P plan for a new product, recording ideas on sticky notes and a flip‑chart.
  5. Gallery walk & feedback (10’) – Groups display their plans; peers provide quick comments using a checklist.
  6. Plenary (5’) – Teacher summarises key take‑aways and checks understanding with a short quiz (e.g., “Which P deals with distribution channels?”).
Conclusion:

Recap the four elements and highlight how they must work together for a coherent marketing strategy. For the exit ticket, each student writes the P they found most challenging and one question they still have. Homework: research a product of their choice and complete a 4‑P worksheet to bring to the next lesson.
