  • Extract and categorise facts, opinions and ideas from a source text.
  • Evaluate the author’s stance and evidence and develop a balanced argument.
  • Organise a response using a clear introduction, body and conclusion with supported points.
  • Apply appropriate register, linking devices and grammatical accuracy to meet IGCSE criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample source excerpt (printed or digital)
  • Student worksheets with planning template
  • Model answer handout
  • Peer‑review checklist
  • Timer/stopwatch
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What are the biggest benefits and risks of social media for teenagers?” Connect this to the directed‑writing task they will complete. Remind students of previous practice analysing source texts and state that today they will learn how to turn that analysis into a structured, evidence‑based article. Success criteria: clear purpose, balanced evaluation, and supported arguments.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Brainstorm pros and cons of social media on a sticky‑note board.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain the directed‑writing brief, purpose, audience and the analysis‑evaluation‑development framework.
  3. Guided practice (15') – Students underline facts, opinions and ideas in the provided excerpt and discuss the author’s stance.
  4. Planning activity (10') – In pairs, fill the three‑paragraph outline table (intro, body, conclusion) with key points and evidence.
  5. Writing sprint (20') – Individually compose a 200‑word article, using the claim‑evidence‑explanation formula.
  6. Peer review (10') – Exchange drafts and use the checklist to give focused feedback.
  7. Whole‑class feedback & editing tips (10') – Highlight common strengths and areas for improvement; students revise their work.
Conclusion:

Summarise the steps from analysing the source to producing a polished article. For the exit ticket, ask each student to write one tip for supporting a claim with evidence. Homework: finish editing the article, ensure it meets the word limit, and bring a printed copy for the next lesson’s final check.
