Lesson Plan
Grade: 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Growth of international travel: trends, statistics, influencing factors
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe recent trends in international travel, including shifts in traveller origins and the rise of low‑cost carriers.
  • Analyse UNWTO statistics (2015‑2023) and calculate annual growth rates for international arrivals.
  • Evaluate economic, technological, social, political and environmental factors that influence travel growth.
  • Apply this understanding by creating and performing a short dramatic scene that incorporates at least three influencing factors.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Laptop with slide deck (trend graphs & data tables)
  • Printed handouts of the UNWTO data (2015‑2023)
  • Worksheet for growth‑rate calculations
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for factor brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a 30‑second video of a bustling international airport to spark curiosity about why people travel. Ask students to share any recent travel experiences and link these stories to the idea that travel is shaped by many forces. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify key trends, interpret data, and dramatise the factors that drive travel growth.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Quick multiple‑choice quiz on basic travel facts to activate prior knowledge.
  2. Presentation (10') – Show a line graph of international arrivals (2015‑2023) and highlight the 2020 dip and subsequent recovery.
  3. Data Analysis (15') – In pairs, students calculate the growth rate between two selected years using the worksheet and discuss what the numbers reveal.
  4. Factor Brainstorm (10') – Groups list economic, technological, social, political and environmental influences on sticky notes and place them on a board.
  5. Drama Task (15') – Each group scripts a 2‑minute scene where characters plan a trip, weaving in at least three of the identified factors.
  6. Gallery Walk & Peer Feedback (10') – Groups watch each other’s performances, noting effective use of factors and giving constructive comments.
  7. Plenary (5') – Recap the main trends and factors; students complete an exit ticket stating one factor they think will dominate travel in the next decade.
Conclusion:

Summarise how international travel has grown despite setbacks, emphasizing the interplay of economic, technological, social, political and environmental drivers. Collect exit tickets and remind students to research a recent tourism initiative for homework, preparing a brief report to share in the next class.
