Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Evaluation methods: testing, user feedback, cost analysis
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the three main evaluation methods (testing, user feedback, cost analysis) and their purposes.
  • Explain how to plan and carry out a test, collect user feedback, and perform a cost analysis for a product.
  • Analyse evaluation data to identify strengths, weaknesses and cost‑saving opportunities, and recommend design improvements.
  • Produce a concise evaluation report that links findings to the design brief and success criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample product or prototype for testing
  • Testing equipment (ruler, scale, stopwatch, etc.)
  • User‑feedback questionnaire handouts
  • Cost‑analysis worksheet or spreadsheet template
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a short video showing a product failure caused by inadequate testing, then ask students what could have been evaluated earlier. Review the design brief and remind them that evaluation is the final stage of the design cycle. Today they will learn how to use testing, user feedback and cost analysis to judge whether a product meets its brief and how to report findings.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list products they have used that needed improvement and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Explain the three evaluation methods and when each is appropriate.
  3. Guided practice – Testing (15'): Demonstrate a simple strength test on the prototype; students record data in a table.
  4. Guided practice – User feedback (15'): Pairs complete a questionnaire for the prototype and analyse common themes.
  5. Guided practice – Cost analysis (15'): Using the cost worksheet, calculate material, labour and overhead costs for the prototype.
  6. Comparative analysis (10'): Complete a quick Venn‑style chart comparing strengths and limitations of each method.
  7. Check for understanding (5'): Exit ticket – write one actionable improvement based on the evaluation results.
Conclusion:
Summarise how testing, user feedback and cost analysis together give a balanced view of a product’s performance and viability. Students complete an exit ticket stating the most critical change they would make. For homework, they draft a one‑page evaluation report for a product of their choice using the provided templates.
