Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Reasons behind the choice of aims and the criteria that governments may set for meeting each aim
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe why governments select particular macro‑economic aims.
  • Identify the key indicators and typical targets for each major aim.
  • Explain the quantitative and qualitative criteria used to assess achievement of each aim.
  • Analyse how trade‑offs between criteria influence the choice of policy mix.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the aims‑indicator table
  • Worksheet with criteria and case‑study scenarios
  • Calculators
  • Sticky notes for exit tickets
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which economic issue do you think will affect your future the most?” Connect responses to prior learning on macro‑economic objectives. State that today’s success criteria are to list the main aims, explain the criteria for each, and discuss how trade‑offs shape policy decisions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write three macro‑economic problems they observe locally; share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Slides covering why governments choose specific aims (political legitimacy, social welfare, stability, etc.).
  3. Group activity (12') – Using the handout, each group matches an aim with its key indicator(s) and typical target; report findings.
  4. Criteria worksheet (10') – Groups select one aim, fill in its quantitative/qualitative criteria, and discuss feasibility.
  5. Trade‑off discussion (8') – Whole‑class debate on policy choices using supplied scenarios (e.g., low unemployment vs. inflation).
  6. Exit quiz (5') – Short Kahoot quiz to check understanding of aims, indicators, and criteria.
Conclusion:

Recap the main aims, their indicators, and the criteria that guide government decisions. Students complete an exit ticket on a sticky note stating one trade‑off they found most compelling. For homework, each student researches the latest national data for one aim and prepares a brief comment on whether the target is being met.
