Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: The roles of a designer, manufacturer and consumer.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the distinct roles of designer, manufacturer, and consumer in product development.
  • Explain how these roles interact throughout the product life‑cycle.
  • Analyse the impact of consumer feedback on design and manufacturing decisions.
  • Evaluate sustainability and cost considerations within each role.
  • Apply the role framework to a real‑world product such as a smartphone.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed handouts of the role table
  • Sticky notes or index cards
  • Markers and large paper for group diagram
  • Laptop with CAD demonstration (optional)
  • Case‑study worksheet (smartphone development)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: who has recently bought a new gadget and why? Review prior learning about product design stages. Today we will identify the three key players—designer, manufacturer, consumer—and set success criteria to be able to explain their responsibilities and how they influence each other.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list a recent product they own and note what they liked/disliked (quick write).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present the three roles using the table, highlighting responsibilities and skills.
  3. Interactive diagram activity (15') – In groups, arrange role cards on a wall to map the product life‑cycle, adding arrows for feedback loops.
  4. Case study analysis (10') – Examine the smartphone flow chart; groups answer two questions on designer‑manufacturer interaction.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (5') – Share findings and clarify misconceptions.
  6. Formative check (5') – Quick quiz (Kahoot or exit ticket) with three questions on role interactions.
Conclusion:
Recap the three roles and how they depend on each other, emphasizing the feedback loop from consumer to designer. Students complete an exit ticket stating one way they could improve a product as a designer. Homework: research a household item and outline its designer, manufacturer, and consumer roles.
