  • Identify and name at least ten countries, their nationalities and official languages in French.
  • Use the verbs être and avoir, possessive adjectives, and prepositions of place to describe origin and language.
  • Conduct a short oral interview using appropriate question forms about country, nationality and language.
  • Write a concise paragraph or brochure segment describing a country’s capital, language(s) and cultural facts in French.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Blank world‑map handouts
  • Vocabulary flashcards (countries, nationalities, languages)
  • Worksheet with Country‑Nationality‑Language table
  • Audio recordings of native speakers
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student notebooks
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which French‑speaking countries have you heard of?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of world geography and the importance of French worldwide. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe a country’s name, nationality and language accurately, and demonstrate this through an interview and a short written piece.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students label a blank world map with any French‑speaking countries they know.
  2. Vocabulary review (10’) – Flashcard relay game to reinforce country, nationality and language terms.
  3. Grammar mini‑lesson (10’) – Quick refresher on être/avoir, possessive adjectives and prepositions of place.
  4. Pair interview (15’) – Students ask and answer set questions about each other’s imagined country, recording answers on their worksheets.
  5. Table completion & map activity (10’) – Fill in the Country‑Nationality‑Language table and add capitals to the map.
  6. Debate (10’) – “Le français est‑il la langue la plus utile à apprendre ?” (students argue in small groups).
  7. Consolidation (5’) – Whole‑class recap of key vocabulary and structures.
  8. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one sentence describing your own country’s nationality and official language in French.
Conclusion:

Summarise the main vocabulary and grammatical points covered, highlighting successful interview examples. Collect exit tickets to gauge individual understanding. For homework, assign students to create a one‑page French brochure promoting a country of their choice, including its capital, language(s) and a brief cultural description.
