Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Action to be taken when hazards are identified or when accidents occur in a school workshop or practical area.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and describe the immediate actions required when a hazard is recognised in the workshop.
  • Explain the correct procedure for responding to an accident, including first‑aid priorities and emergency notification.
  • Complete and submit the required safety documentation (Hazard Register, Risk Assessment, Accident Report) accurately and promptly.
  • Analyse a hazard incident using root‑cause techniques and propose permanent control measures.
  • Demonstrate safe communication of safety procedures to peers.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts of Hazard Register and Accident Report forms
  • Sample risk assessment worksheet
  • First‑aid kit (for demonstration)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Safety signage examples
Introduction:

Begin with a short video of a workshop incident to capture attention. Ask students what they would do first if they saw a dangerous tool left unattended, linking to prior lessons on risk assessment. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to follow a clear step‑by‑step response plan and accurately record incidents.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write down any recent hazards they observed; share briefly (2’).
  2. Direct instruction (10'): Teacher presents the immediate hazard response steps using slides and a flowchart.
  3. Guided practice (15'): In pairs, students role‑play a hazard scenario, practising stopping work, isolating the hazard and notifying the supervisor.
  4. Documentation activity (10'): Complete a mock Hazard Register entry and Risk Assessment form for the scenario.
  5. Accident response drill (15'): Simulated minor injury; students follow first‑aid steps, call emergency services for a serious injury, and fill an Accident Report form.
  6. Investigation & control planning (10'): Whole class uses the “5 Whys” to identify root causes and propose permanent controls.
  7. Check for understanding (5'): Quick quiz (Kahoot/exit ticket) on key steps.
Conclusion:

Recap the key actions for both hazards and accidents, emphasizing swift documentation. Students complete an exit ticket stating the first three steps they would take if a hazard appears. For homework, review the school’s safety policy and bring one suggestion for improvement.
