Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Managing tourism development: planning, community involvement
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism.
  • Explain the principles of sustainable tourism and how planning mitigates negative impacts.
  • Apply community‑involvement strategies to develop a sustainable tourism plan.
  • Design a simple monitoring indicator to evaluate the success of a tourism sustainability plan.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handout with impact table
  • Worksheet for planning activity
  • Sticky notes and pens
  • Assessment rubric
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a striking image of a popular tourist destination showing both bustling activity and environmental strain. Ask students what they already know about tourism’s effects on local communities and the environment. Explain that today they will explore how careful planning and community involvement can create sustainable tourism outcomes, and outline the success criteria: identify impacts, propose planning steps, and suggest community‑based solutions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list three positive and three negative impacts of tourism on a place they know.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of tourism impacts and sustainability principles using slides.
  3. Group activity (15') – Analyse the case‑study table; each group identifies key impacts and discusses mitigation ideas.
  4. Planning workshop (20') – Groups develop a brief sustainable tourism plan using the five‑step planning framework, incorporating community involvement strategies.
  5. Share & feedback (10') – Groups present their plans; peers and teacher give constructive feedback.
  6. Indicator design (5') – Individually write one monitoring indicator for their plan.
Conclusion:

Elicit a quick recap of the main planning steps and community strategies discussed. Have students complete an exit ticket stating one actionable idea they could apply locally. Assign homework to research a real tourism site and write a short paragraph evaluating its sustainability practices.
