Metals are commonly used for kitchen utensils because they have the following properties:
- Good thermal conductivity – allows heat to spread quickly and evenly, preventing hot spots. Example: Aluminium conducts heat well, making it ideal for frying pans.
- High strength and durability – resists bending or breaking under normal use. Example: Stainless steel is strong enough to withstand frequent stirring and scraping.
- Corrosion resistance – does not rust or degrade when exposed to water and food acids. Example: Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a protective oxide layer.
