Document Production – Adding and Deleting Bookmarks and Hyperlinks
Learning Objective
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
Add a bookmark to a document.
Delete a bookmark from a document.
Create a hyperlink that links to another location in the same document, to another document, or to a web page.
Remove a hyperlink.
What are Bookmarks and Hyperlinks?
Bookmarks are invisible markers that you can place at any point in a document. They allow you to jump quickly to that location using the navigation pane or a hyperlink.
Hyperlinks are clickable links that take the reader to another location – either within the same document, to a different file, or to a web address (URL).
Adding a Bookmark
Place the cursor at the point where you want the bookmark.
Open the Insert menu and choose Bookmark….
In the dialog box, type a short, descriptive name (no spaces – use underscores or camelCase).
Click Add (or OK). The bookmark is now stored in the document.
Deleting a Bookmark
Open the Insert menu and select Bookmark… again.
In the list of existing bookmarks, click the one you wish to remove.
Press the Delete button (or Remove).
Confirm the deletion if prompted.
Adding a Hyperlink
Select the text, image, or object you want to turn into a link.
Right‑click the selection and choose Hyperlink… (or use the Insert > Hyperlink command).
In the dialog box, choose the link type:
Place in This Document – link to a heading, bookmark, or page number.
Existing File or Web Page – browse to a file on your computer or type a URL (e.g., https://www.example.com).
Email Address – creates a mailto link.
Enter the target location or address and click OK.
Deleting a Hyperlink
Click anywhere on the hyperlink to place the cursor within it.
Press Ctrl + K (or right‑click and choose Remove Hyperlink).
The link is removed, leaving the plain text or object behind.

Common Mistakes and Tips
Do not use spaces in bookmark names; they cause errors when linking.
Always test a hyperlink after creating it to ensure it points to the correct destination.
When linking to a bookmark, make sure the bookmark exists before creating the link.
Use descriptive names (e.g., Chapter3_Intro) so you can locate bookmarks easily.
Remember that deleting a bookmarked section does not automatically delete the bookmark – you must remove it manually.
