Chemistry of the Environment – Air Quality and Climate 🌍

Objective: State the adverse effect of these air pollutants:

(a) Carbon Dioxide \$CO_2\$ 🌡️

Think of the Earth as a cozy blanket. \$CO_2\$ is like adding extra layers to that blanket. The more layers, the warmer it gets, which is called global warming. When the planet warms, the climate changes – storms become stronger, ice melts, and sea levels rise.

  • Higher \$CO_2\$ → more heat trapped 🌡️
  • Climate change: altered weather patterns, melting ice, higher seas 🌊

(b) Carbon Monoxide \$CO\$ ☠️

Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It looks and smells like nothing, but it blocks oxygen from reaching your blood. Even a small amount can make you feel dizzy or faint, and high levels can be fatal.

  • Toxic gas that interferes with oxygen transport in the body
  • Can cause headaches, dizziness, and in extreme cases, death 💀

(c) Particulates (PM2.5 & PM10) 💨

Particulates are tiny solid or liquid particles that float in the air. They’re so small that they can sneak into your lungs and even your bloodstream.

  • Increase risk of respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis
  • Long‑term exposure linked to lung cancer and heart disease 🎗️

(d) Methane \$CH_4\$ 🌱

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, about 28 times stronger than \$CO_2\$ at trapping heat. It’s released when cows chew their cud, from landfills, and from leaking natural gas pipelines.

  • Higher \$CH_4\$ → more global warming 🌡️
  • Contributes to climate change and extreme weather events 🌪️

(e) Oxides of Nitrogen \$NO_x\$ 🌫️

Nitrogen oxides are produced when fuels burn at high temperatures (cars, power plants). They react in the atmosphere to form acid rain and photochemical smog, and they irritate the lungs.

  • Acid rain: damages trees, lakes, and buildings 🌧️
  • Photochemical smog: causes coughing, wheezing, and eye irritation 😷
  • Can lead to respiratory problems in people and animals

(f) Sulfur Dioxide \$SO_2\$ 🌋

Sulfur dioxide comes mainly from burning fossil fuels like coal. When it mixes with water vapor, it forms sulfuric acid, which falls to the ground as acid rain.

  • Acid rain: harms aquatic life, erodes buildings, and damages crops 🌱
  • Can cause breathing difficulties, especially for children and the elderly
