Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Law
Lesson Topic: General defences and remedies
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main general defences in tort law and their key elements.
  • Distinguish between complete and partial defences and explain their effect on liability.
  • Explain the range of remedies available in tort and when each is appropriate.
  • Apply the principles of defences and remedies to factual scenarios.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for slide deck
  • Handout summarising defences and remedies (tables)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “When might a defendant be able to avoid liability?” Connect to prior learning on negligence. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify each defence, determine its impact, and match appropriate remedies to tort scenarios.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – students list any defences they recall from previous lessons.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – overview of general defences using a flowchart.
  3. Interactive table activity (10’) – groups complete missing elements of the defence summary table.
  4. Mini‑lecture (10’) – introduce tort remedies, contrasting damages with injunctions.
  5. Case‑analysis (15’) – groups apply a scenario to decide which defence and remedy apply; teacher circulates.
  6. Whole‑class debrief & check for understanding (5’) – quick quiz via Kahoot.
Conclusion:
Summarise that defences can either extinguish liability or reduce damages, and that remedies aim to compensate or prevent further harm. Ask students to write one exit‑ticket naming a defence and the remedy most likely to follow. Assign homework to read the textbook chapter and prepare a brief written analysis of a recent tort case.
