Lesson Plan
Grade: A-Level Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: state the name and type of pathogen that causes each of the following diseases: cholera – caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, malaria – caused by the protoctists Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale and Plasmodium vivax,
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the bacterial pathogen causing cholera and its classification.
  • List the protoctist species that cause malaria and describe their classification.
  • Compare structural and replication differences between bacterial and protoctist pathogens.
  • Explain how knowledge of pathogen type informs disease‑control strategies.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides with pathogen tables
  • Printed worksheet (disease–pathogen matching activity)
  • Microscopy images of Vibrio cholerae and Plasmodium stages
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Exit ticket cards
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: which diseases have you heard of that are caused by microbes? Review prior knowledge of bacteria and protoctists. Today you will be able to name the specific pathogen and its type for cholera and malaria, and explain why this matters for treatment.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students complete a matching quiz on disease names and pathogen types.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the classification of Vibrio cholerae and the Plasmodium species using slides and images.
  3. Guided analysis (10’) – In pairs, students examine provided diagrams and fill a table summarising cell structure, replication, and transmission.
  4. Class discussion (8’) – Compare bacterial vs protoctist strategies; teacher checks understanding with clicker questions.
  5. Formative check (7’) – Exit ticket: write the pathogen name and type for cholera and malaria and one control measure for each.
Conclusion:
Summarise that cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and malaria by protoctist Plasmodium species, highlighting their differing biology. Ask students to share one key difference they noted. For homework, assign a short research task on another infectious disease and its pathogen type.
