Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: List the components of blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four main components of blood and their relative proportions.
  • Explain the primary function of each blood component.
  • Identify key structural features of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma.
  • Compare the role of plasma as a transport medium with that of the cellular components.
  • Apply knowledge by correctly labeling a diagram of blood components.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed diagram of blood components for each student
  • Worksheet with labeling activity
  • Markers / coloured pencils
  • Digital images of blood smears
  • Exit ticket cards
Introduction:

Begin with a quick question: “What do you think blood is made of?” Review prior learning about cells and bodily fluids, then state that today students will identify and describe the four components of blood and their roles in transport.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write everything they know about blood components on sticky notes and display them.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (10') – Introduce RBCs, WBCs, platelets, and plasma, showing a cross‑section diagram.
  3. Guided analysis (10') – Examine the functions and volume percentages table; discuss findings in pairs.
  4. Labeling activity (15') – Students label printed diagrams; teacher circulates to check understanding.
  5. Quick quiz (5') – Kahoot/exit‑ticket with three key questions on component functions.
  6. Recap & reflection (5') – Class shares one new fact they learned and clarifies any misconceptions.
Conclusion:

Summarise that blood consists of red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma, each with distinct functions. Students complete an exit ticket stating the most important point they learned. For homework, assign a short worksheet matching functions to each component.
