Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: prevalence and risk factors of malaria
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe current global prevalence of malaria and identify the regions most affected.
  • Explain the key environmental, socio‑economic, behavioural and biological risk factors influencing malaria distribution.
  • Analyse how these risk factors shape control strategies and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Interpret prevalence data to assess public‑health implications.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • World map or GIS display
  • Printed table of 2023 malaria case data
  • Handout summarising risk factors
  • Student worksheets for data analysis
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper
  • Online quiz platform (e.g., Kahoot)
Introduction:

Begin with a striking fact: over 200 million malaria cases occur each year, almost all in sub‑Saharan Africa. Ask learners what they already know about why malaria persists in some regions. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe prevalence patterns, identify major risk factors, and link these to appropriate control measures.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – quick Kahoot quiz on basic malaria terminology.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – present global prevalence data and map the distribution.
  3. Group analysis (15') – students examine the case‑table, calculate incidence, and discuss environmental, socio‑economic, behavioural and biological risk factors.
  4. Whole‑class synthesis (10') – groups share findings; teacher connects risk factors to the five control strategies.
  5. Formative check (5') – exit ticket: list two risk factors and one suitable intervention.
Conclusion:

Recap the main prevalence figures and the suite of risk factors that drive malaria distribution. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework: students write a brief paragraph proposing a targeted control measure for a chosen high‑risk region.
