Grade: Date: 11/04/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to format a table including to set horizontal cell alignment (left, right, centre, fully justified), set vertical cell alignment (top, middle, bottom), show gridlines, hide gridlines, wrap text within a cell, shading/colouring cells, adjust r
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe horizontal and vertical alignment options for table cells
    .
  • Demonstrate how to show and hide gridlines in a table.
  • Apply text wrapping, cell shading, and adjust row height and column width.
  • Use table‑properties dialogs in ICT software to format tables accurately.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with internet access.
  • Word‑processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer).
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard.
  • Sample worksheet with table‑formatting tasks.
  • HTML editor (optional) for demonstration.
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: who has ever created a table in a document? Review the basic structure of rows, columns and cells they already know. Explain that today they will master formatting tables to make data clear and visually appealing. Success will be measured by correctly formatting a sample table using alignment, gridlines, wrapping and shading.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Short quiz on table terminology; teacher checks answers.
  2. Mini‑lecture & demo (10’) – Show HTML and word‑processor table properties covering alignment, gridlines, wrapping, shading, row height and column width.
  3. Guided practice (15’) – Students insert a 3×3 table and follow step‑by‑step instructions to apply each formatting feature while the teacher circulates.
  4. Pair activity (10’) – Pairs exchange tables and critique each other's formatting using a checklist.
  5. Independent task (10’) – Create a new table presenting a small data set, applying all learned features.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one formatting option they found most useful and why.
Conclusion:
Review the key formatting tools we used and ask a few volunteers to share their finished tables. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding. For homework, students will design a table in HTML that incorporates all formatting options covered.
