Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Wide Area Network (WAN) and the differences between these networks
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the characteristics and coverage areas of LAN, WLAN, and WAN.
  • Compare transmission media, speeds, latency, and security considerations for each network type.
  • Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of LAN, WLAN, and WAN in real‑world contexts.
  • Explain how networks affect resource sharing, communication, scalability, cost and reliability.
  • Identify the most appropriate network type for given scenarios.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computer with internet access for teacher demo
  • Printed handouts summarising LAN/WLAN/WAN features
  • Network topology diagrams (paper or digital)
  • Worksheets for comparative analysis
  • Wi‑Fi router and Ethernet cable for simple demo (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: Who uses Wi‑Fi at home or school and what devices connect?

Recall that a network links devices to share resources, and today we’ll explore three common types.

By the end of the lesson you will be able to identify each type, compare their key features, and choose the most suitable network for a given situation.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list devices they connect to at school/home (activate prior knowledge).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define LAN, WLAN, WAN with slide visuals and highlight key characteristics.
  3. Comparative activity (12'): In pairs, complete a Venn diagram comparing the three networks using the handout.
  4. Real‑world examples & demo (8'): Show short video clips of a school LAN, a café WLAN, and a corporate WAN; discuss advantages/disadvantages.
  5. Guided practice (10'): Worksheet where students match scenarios to the appropriate network and justify their choice; teacher provides formative feedback.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Students write one key difference between WLAN and WAN on a sticky note.
Conclusion:

Review the main differences in coverage, media, speed and security among LAN, WLAN and WAN.

Students submit an exit ticket summarising a key distinction, confirming understanding.

Assign homework: research a local business’s network setup and prepare a brief report linking it to today’s concepts.
