Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand minimising the potential danger of using email including an awareness of the potential dangers of opening or replying to an email from an unknown person, an awareness of the risks associated with sending personal identifiable data
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe common email threats such as phishing, malware, and social engineering.
  • Explain the risks of opening or replying to emails from unknown senders and of sending personal identifiable data.
  • Apply safe‑email practices including verifying senders, checking attachments, hovering over links, using encryption and two‑factor authentication.
  • Evaluate email content to decide when to delete, forward or reply safely.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample email examples (printed or digital)
  • Worksheet with checklist and scenario questions
  • Internet access for live demo of email security settings
  • Computers or tablets for students
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a real‑world phishing email that caused a data breach. Ask learners to share any experiences they have had with suspicious emails to activate prior knowledge. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify risks and apply safe‑email procedures.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – students examine a mock email and note anything that looks suspicious; teacher collects responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – overview of email threats and why personal data is vulnerable, using the source content.
  3. Guided practice (12') – work in pairs to complete the safe‑email checklist on a worksheet, checking sender address, attachments, links, etc.
  4. Demonstration (8') – live demo of hovering over links, checking headers, and enabling two‑factor authentication on a school email account.
  5. Scenario activity (10') – groups receive different email scenarios and decide the appropriate action (reply, delete, encrypt, etc.) and present their reasoning.
  6. Quick recap quiz (5') – Kahoot or exit ticket with three key questions to confirm understanding.
Conclusion:
Summarise the key steps for safe email handling and remind students of the checklist they will keep. Collect an exit ticket where each learner writes one new habit they will adopt when using email. Assign a homework task to audit their own inbox and remove any unnecessary messages or unsecured personal data.
