Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: job, batch and flow production
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the three main methods of production (job, batch, flow) and their key characteristics.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each production method.
  • Analyse which production method is most appropriate for different types of products and industries.
  • Evaluate the impact of volume, flexibility, set‑up time and cost on method selection.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed comparison chart/handout
  • Worksheet with case studies
  • Sticky notes for exit tickets
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: which everyday items do you think are made using different production methods? Review prior knowledge of basic production concepts. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify and evaluate job, batch and flow production.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list three products they use daily and guess the production method; share answers.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Teacher presents definitions, key characteristics and a diagram of the three methods.
  3. Guided comparison activity (12') – Pairs fill a comparison table (volume, flexibility, set‑up, cost) using the worksheet.
  4. Case study analysis (10') – Groups receive a scenario (e.g., custom furniture, bakery, car factory) and decide the most suitable method, justifying their choice.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (8') – Groups present findings; teacher highlights misconceptions and reinforces advantages/disadvantages.
  6. Quick quiz (5') – Exit ticket with three multiple‑choice questions to check understanding.
Conclusion:

Summarise that the choice of production method depends on product volume, customization and cost considerations. Ask students to write one key point they will remember on a sticky note as an exit ticket. For homework, assign a brief research task to find a real‑world example of each method and explain why it fits.
