Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses and constraints of email communication including acceptable language, guidelines set by an employer, the need for security, netiquette, email groups, carbon copy (cc), blind carbon copy (bcc), forward, attach
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics and typical uses of email in business and education.
  • Explain employer guidelines, netiquette, and security requirements for professional email communication.
  • Demonstrate correct use of email functions (To, CC, BCC, forward, attach) and compose a professional email following best practice.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer lab with internet access
  • Sample email templates handout
  • Email client (e.g., Outlook or Gmail) for each student
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Quiz/exit‑ticket sheets
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: how many emails do you send each day? Discuss the role of email in school and the workplace, linking to prior knowledge of digital communication. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to craft professional emails that meet employer guidelines and security standards.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list pros and cons of email on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher presents characteristics, uses, and constraints of email using slides.
  3. Guided practice (12'): Review employer language guidelines and netiquette; students analyse a poorly written email and identify issues.
  4. Demonstration (8'): Show how to use To, CC, BCC, attach, and forward safely in the email client.
  5. Pair activity (15'): Each pair composes a professional email to a simulated client, incorporating correct subject line, greeting, body, CC/BCC, and attachment. Teacher circulates for feedback.
  6. Quick quiz (5'): Exit ticket with three questions on security and function usage.
Conclusion:
Recap the key points about email etiquette, security, and proper use of CC/BCC. Invite a few students to share one improvement they made to their email. Collect exit tickets and assign homework: draft an email to a teacher requesting feedback on a project, applying today’s guidelines.
