Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: why communication is important for a business
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe why effective communication is vital for business performance.
  • Identify different types of business communication and their appropriate uses.
  • Analyse how communication barriers affect operations and propose strategies to overcome them.
  • Evaluate the impact of communication on productivity, customer satisfaction and financial results.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising communication types and barriers
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Laptop with internet access for video clip
Introduction:
Begin with a short video showing a workplace miscommunication that leads to a costly error. Ask students to share examples of communication breakdowns they have observed or experienced. Explain that today they will explore why communication is essential for business success and how to communicate effectively. Success will be measured by their ability to identify communication types, barriers and appropriate strategies.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write a quick response to the video: what went wrong and how better communication could have prevented it.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Teacher presents key reasons communication is important and outlines formal/informal, written/oral types using slides.
  3. Guided analysis (10’) – In pairs, students examine a case‑study worksheet, match communication types to business situations and discuss benefits.
  4. Barrier brainstorm (8’) – Whole class generates common communication barriers on sticky notes; teacher clusters them and links to strategies.
  5. Strategy role‑play (12’) – Small groups role‑play a scenario applying at least two strategies to overcome a barrier; peers give feedback.
  6. Consolidation quiz (5’) – Quick Kahoot/quiz to check understanding of impacts on performance.
  7. Exit ticket (5’) – Students write one action they will take to improve communication in their own work or study.
Conclusion:
Summarise how effective communication links people, processes and information, driving productivity and profitability. Invite a few students to share one key insight they will apply in the future. Collect exit tickets as the assessment and assign homework to research a real company that uses strong communication practices and prepare a brief summary.
