Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of using the internet including the differences between the internet, an intranet, an extranet and the World Wide Web (WWW), blog, forum, wiki, social networking
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics and core protocols of the Internet.
  • Compare the Internet, Intranet, Extranet and the World Wide Web (WWW) in terms of scope, access control and typical uses.
  • Evaluate the main advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet for communication and learning.
  • Identify the purposes, features and pros/cons of blogs, forums, wikis and social networking sites.
  • Apply safe and responsible practices when selecting and using online communication tools.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computers or tablets with internet access (one per student or pair)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising Internet vs Intranet vs Extranet vs WWW
  • Comparison worksheet activity
  • Access to a classroom blog or wiki platform (e.g., Google Sites)
 Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What online service could you not live without?” Capture responses on the board to spark interest. Review briefly what students already know about the Internet and its everyday uses. Explain that today they will explore how the Internet differs from related networks and communication tools, and how to use them responsibly.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list three advantages and three disadvantages of the Internet on a sticky note; share with a partner.
  2. Direct Instruction (10'): Teacher presents key characteristics, protocols and the global scope of the Internet using slides.
  3. Comparison Activity (12'): In small groups, learners fill a Venn diagram comparing Internet, Intranet, Extranet and WWW, then discuss findings.
  4. Web‑Tools Exploration (15'): Demonstrate a blog, forum, wiki and social networking site; students complete a quick worksheet identifying uses, advantages and disadvantages of each.
  5. Guided Discussion (8'): Whole‑class debrief on safety, privacy and digital citizenship when using these tools.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Exit ticket – “Write one new thing you learned about the differences between Internet and Intranet and one safe practice you will follow online.”
Conclusion:

Recap the main differences between the Internet, Intranet, Extranet and WWW, and highlight the role of blogs, forums, wikis and social networks in modern communication. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework: create a one‑page mind map summarising the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet. Remind students to reflect on safe online behaviour when completing the task.
