Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Analysis of existing products: function, aesthetics, ergonomics, sustainability
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the function, aesthetics, ergonomics and sustainability criteria for product analysis.
  • Apply a systematic evaluation process to assess a product against these criteria.
  • Construct and interpret an evaluation matrix to compare multiple products.
  • Communicate findings in a concise report with recommendations for improvement.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample product (e.g., handheld electric drill) or images
  • Evaluation matrix worksheet
  • Rulers/measuring tape for ergonomic measurements
  • Calculator or spreadsheet software
  • Sticky notes or index cards for brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a quick video showing innovative product designs and ask students what makes them successful. Recall previous lessons on design criteria and introduce today’s focus on analysing existing products across function, aesthetics, ergonomics and sustainability. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to evaluate a product and produce an evidence‑based report.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three everyday products and note one functional and one aesthetic feature for each. (Check understanding)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the four analysis criteria with examples, using the projector. (Guided notes)
  3. Group activity – Functional & Aesthetic analysis (15’) – In groups, examine the sample product, fill the functional and aesthetic sections of the worksheet. (Teacher circulates)
  4. Ergonomic & Sustainability measurement (15’) – Measure grip dimensions, discuss material choices and calculate a simple sustainability score using the provided formula. (Peer discussion)
  5. Evaluation matrix completion (10’) – Enter scores into the matrix, calculate total, and compare across products. (Whole‑class debrief)
  6. Report writing (10’) – Each group drafts a brief evaluation report highlighting strengths, weaknesses and improvement ideas. (Exit ticket)
Conclusion:
Summarise how the four criteria combine to give a holistic view of product performance. Collect the exit tickets where groups share one key recommendation. Assign homework to select a household item, complete a personal evaluation matrix, and bring findings to the next class.
