Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Computer Science
Lesson Topic: Show understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe core AI techniques such as machine learning, neural networks, expert systems, and natural language processing.
  • Explain major ethical concerns of AI, including bias, privacy, transparency, accountability, job displacement, and autonomous weapons.
  • Analyse ownership and intellectual‑property issues related to AI‑generated data, models, and inventions.
  • Apply an ethical decision‑making checklist to evaluate an AI application, e.g., healthcare diagnostics.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising AI techniques and ethical checklist
  • Laptop with internet access for a short video demo
  • Printed case‑study worksheet (AI in healthcare)
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a provocative question: “Can a machine make moral decisions?” Connect to students’ prior knowledge of AI basics covered last week. Outline that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe AI techniques, identify key ethical and ownership issues, and evaluate an AI system using a decision‑making framework.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’): Students write quick responses to the opening question on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’): Review AI techniques and introduce ethical concerns with a slide deck.
  3. Group analysis (15’): Small groups examine the healthcare case‑study worksheet and list ethical questions.
  4. Ownership discussion (10’): Whole‑class discussion of IP issues using the table from the notes.
  5. Decision‑making framework activity (10’): Groups apply the ethical checklist to the case and record findings.
  6. Share & feedback (5’): Groups present key points; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
Conclusion:
Summarise how AI’s power is matched by ethical and ownership responsibilities. Collect exit tickets where each student writes one action they would take to ensure responsible AI use. Assign homework to research a recent AI news story and evaluate it using the checklist.
