Lesson Topic: Sustainable urban development: challenges, issues, strategies, examples
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key challenges and core issues associated with sustainable urban development.
  • Explain at least three major strategies and their intended outcomes for creating sustainable cities.
  • Analyse case‑study examples to identify successful practices and their impacts.
  • Evaluate monitoring indicators used to assess urban sustainability progress.
Materials Needed:

  • Internet access for an interactive map demo
Introduction:
Imagine a city where traffic jams are rare and fresh air is the norm. Building on prior lessons about urban growth and its impacts, students will explore how cities can develop sustainably. By the end of the lesson they will be able to identify challenges, explain key strategies, and assess real‑world examples.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students brainstorm local urban issues on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Definition, key challenges, and core issues presented with slides.
  3. Strategy carousel (15'): Groups rotate stations examining the strategy table, noting key actions and intended outcomes.
  4. Case‑study analysis (15'): Small groups investigate one city case study and answer worksheet questions.
  5. Monitoring indicators discussion (10'): Whole‑class synthesis of how progress is measured (emissions, transport mode share, green space, etc.).
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Individually write one strategy to prioritize for their hometown and justify the choice.
Conclusion:
We recap the challenges, strategies, and case‑study insights, emphasizing how monitoring links actions to outcomes. Students hand in their exit tickets as a quick retrieval check. For homework, they research a local sustainability initiative and prepare a brief summary to share in the next lesson.
