Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the processes of accountability in a business
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the relationship between delegation, authority, responsibility and accountability.
  • Explain the steps in the delegation process and the associated accountability mechanisms.
  • Analyse how different organisational structures affect delegation and accountability flows.
  • Apply a RACI chart to design clear accountability for a delegated task.
  • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of effective delegation in a business context.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising delegation steps and accountability mechanisms
  • Sample RACI‑chart template
  • Case‑study worksheet (GreenTech Ltd.)
  • PowerPoint slides with flowchart diagram
Introduction:

Begin with a short video clip of a manager making a rapid decision in a tech start‑up to highlight why clear delegation matters. Ask students what they already know about authority versus accountability, then outline that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map delegation processes and design accountability tools.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on key terms (delegation, authority, responsibility, accountability).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Definitions and the 7‑step delegation process with examples.
  3. Group activity (15'): In small groups create a RACI chart for the GreenTech case study and identify reporting mechanisms.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Compare how accountability flows in functional, matrix and flat structures using the provided table.
  5. Teacher modelling (5'): Draw the delegation‑accountability flowchart on the board, highlighting feedback loops.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Exit‑ticket – one sentence explaining why a manager remains ultimately accountable after delegating.
Conclusion:

Summarise the key steps of delegation and how accountability is maintained through performance measures and reporting. Collect exit‑tickets and remind students to complete a short reflection worksheet at home, describing how they could apply delegation principles in a part‑time job or group project.
