Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the meaning and purpose of business strategy
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of a business strategy and how it links vision, mission and objectives.
  • Explain the key components of a business strategy (vision, mission, objectives, competitive advantage, resource allocation, implementation plan).
  • Analyse how a well‑formulated strategy supports decision‑making and sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Identify common pitfalls in strategic planning and propose ways to avoid them.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout summarising vision, mission, objectives and strategy components
  • Printed case study of a company’s strategy
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Laptop with internet access for quick research
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “What gives a company a lasting edge over rivals?” Use responses to highlight the need for a clear strategy. Review students’ prior knowledge of vision and mission statements. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to articulate the purpose of a business strategy and recognise its essential elements.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write a definition of “business strategy” and give one real‑world example.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the key elements (vision, mission, objectives, competitive advantage, resource allocation, implementation plan) with slide visuals.
  3. Guided case analysis (15’) – In pairs, examine the printed case study, identify the vision, mission, strategic objectives and discuss how resources are allocated.
  4. Group discussion (10’) – Pairs share findings; teacher highlights common pitfalls and checks understanding through rapid Q&A.
  5. Consolidation activity (10’) – Teams draft a brief implementation plan for one strategic objective using sticky notes; teacher circulates to give feedback.
  6. Recap & exit ticket (5’) – Students write one sentence answering: “Why does every business need a strategy?”
Conclusion:

Summarise how a coherent strategy connects vision, mission and measurable objectives, enabling coordinated action and competitive advantage. Collect exit tickets to gauge immediate understanding. For homework, ask students to research a company of their choice, identify its current business strategy, and write a short paragraph linking it to the company’s vision and mission.
