Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the public and private sectors and businesses within those sectors
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the ownership and primary purpose differences between the public and private sectors.
  • Identify examples of businesses in each of the five economic sectors and classify them as public or private.
  • Compare funding sources and regulatory environments across sectors.
  • Analyse how sector classification influences business behaviour and decision‑making.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout with sector comparison table
  • Worksheet for classification activity
  • Sticky notes and pens for group work
Introduction:

Begin by asking students to name services they use daily and consider who provides them. Link this to prior knowledge of the five economic sectors. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to differentiate public and private sector businesses and justify why they operate differently.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): List everyday services and note whether they think they are public or private.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present definitions of public vs. private sectors and review the five economic sectors.
  3. Guided activity (15'): In pairs, complete a worksheet matching businesses to sector and ownership; teacher circulates for support.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Share worksheet answers, highlight differences in objectives, funding and regulation.
  5. Case‑study analysis (10'): Compare a public hospital with a private clinic, discussing implications for pricing and accountability.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one key difference between the sectors and give one example of each.
Conclusion:

Recap the main distinctions between public and private sector businesses across all economic sectors. Collect exit tickets to check understanding, and assign a homework task to research a local business, classify its sector and ownership, and explain one implication of that classification.
