Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: different payment methods: time based pay, salary, piece rates, commission, bonuses, profit sharing, performance-related pay and fringe benefits
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe at least five different employee payment methods and their key features.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
  • Analyse which payment method best suits a given type of work or organisational goal.
  • Evaluate the impact of fringe benefits on employee motivation.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint presentation summarising each method
  • Handout worksheet with a comparison table
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Calculator (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “If you could choose any way to be paid for a job, what would you prefer?” This activates prior knowledge of wages and sparks interest. Explain that today’s lesson will explore eight common payment methods and the criteria we will use to assess their effectiveness.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – poll results and brief whole‑class discussion.
  2. Teacher input (15’) – slide‑show overview of each payment method, including formulas for piece rates and commission.
  3. Guided comparison (10’) – pairs analyse the summary table, noting advantages and disadvantages.
  4. Case‑study activity (15’) – groups receive a business scenario, select the most appropriate payment method and justify their choice.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (10’) – groups present findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – quick quiz/exit ticket on key concepts.
Conclusion:
Summarise how different payment methods align with work type and organisational objectives. Students complete an exit ticket stating which method they would recommend for a retail sales role and why. For homework, research a real company’s remuneration package and prepare a brief report.
