Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: management styles: autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire and paternalistic
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the four management styles.
  • Compare the styles in terms of decision‑making, employee involvement and typical organisational contexts.
  • Evaluate which style best fits a given business scenario.
  • Apply understanding by constructing a quadrant diagram that positions the styles by control and involvement.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts summarising each style
  • Worksheet with comparison table and case scenarios
  • Sticky notes or index cards
  • Laptop for teacher presentation
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll asking students to name a manager they have experienced and guess the style used. Link this to prior knowledge of leadership and explain that today they will examine four core management styles and how these affect decision‑making and motivation. By the end of the lesson they will be able to identify the most appropriate style for different business contexts.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write a brief description of a manager they know and label the likely style.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Teacher presents the four styles with key characteristics, advantages and disadvantages using slides.
  3. Comparative analysis (12') – In groups, students complete a comparison table (decision‑making, employee involvement, typical contexts) on the worksheet.
  4. Case‑study application (15') – Groups receive a business scenario and decide which style is most suitable, providing justification.
  5. Quadrant diagram creation (8') – Each group draws the suggested quadrant chart positioning the four styles.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5') – Groups share their decisions; teacher highlights the value of blending styles.
  7. Check for understanding (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz on advantages/disadvantages of each style.
Conclusion:

Recap the main features of each management style and emphasise how context determines the best approach. Students complete an exit ticket stating which style they would adopt in a given situation and why. For homework, ask them to research a real company and write a short paragraph describing the management style they observe.
