Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the different stages of business decision-making and the role of objectives in the stages of business decision-making
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the seven stages of business decision‑making.
  • Explain how business objectives influence each stage.
  • Distinguish between strategic, tactical and operational objectives.
  • Apply the decision‑making process to a real‑world case (new product launch).
  • Evaluate decisions against measurable objectives and propose adjustments.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of decision‑making stages and objectives table
  • Case study worksheet (new product launch)
  • Sticky notes or index cards for brainstorming alternatives
  • Laptop with internet access for quick market research
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What recent business decision have you heard about?” Use responses to highlight the need for systematic decision‑making. Recall the previous lesson on business objectives and set the success criteria: students will map objectives onto each decision‑making stage and justify their choices.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list a recent business decision and identify any stated objectives.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the seven decision‑making stages and the role of objectives, using a flowchart.
  3. Guided practice (12’) – In pairs, complete the table linking objectives to each stage for the new‑product case.
  4. Brainstorm alternatives (8’) – Groups generate three product concepts on sticky notes, referencing tactical and operational objectives.
  5. Evaluation activity (10’) – Groups assess alternatives against criteria derived from objectives; teacher provides feedback.
  6. Decision & implementation plan (8’) – Each group selects the best alternative and outlines a brief implementation timeline aligned with objectives.
  7. Review & check for understanding (7’) – Whole‑class discussion and exit ticket: write one way objectives guide the monitoring stage.
Conclusion:
Summarise how objectives provide a benchmark throughout the decision process and why alignment across strategic, tactical and operational levels is essential. Students complete an exit ticket summarising the key link between objectives and the monitoring stage. For homework, ask them to find a recent news article and analyse its decision‑making stages and associated objectives.
