Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: different types of training: induction, on-the-job and off-the-job
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the three main types of employee training (induction, on‑the‑job, off‑the‑job).
  • Explain the purpose, typical content and delivery methods for each training type.
  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of each training type using appropriate criteria.
  • Apply knowledge by selecting suitable training methods for a given business scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts with the comparison table
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • E‑learning demo videos
  • Flip chart and sticky notes
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “What was your first day at work like?” to activate personal experiences of induction. Review that training equips employees with skills, knowledge and attitudes, linking to previous lessons on HR functions. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify, describe and evaluate induction, on‑the‑job and off‑the‑job training.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list any training they have experienced and share a brief example.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define induction, on‑the‑job and off‑the‑job training; present key features on slides.
  3. Group case activity (15’) – Each group receives a business scenario (retail, manufacturing, management) and decides which training type(s) are most appropriate, using the handout.
  4. Comparison table analysis (10’) – Groups fill in advantages/disadvantages for each type; teacher circulates to guide.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (10’) – Groups present findings; teacher highlights differences in cost, location and focus.
  6. Quick quiz (5’) – Kahoot or paper quiz to check understanding of definitions and comparisons.
Conclusion:

Recap the key distinctions between induction, on‑the‑job and off‑the‑job training. For the exit ticket, students write one advantage and one disadvantage of each type on a sticky note and place it on the flip chart. Homework: research a real company’s training programme and write a brief description of which type(s) it uses and why.
