Lesson Plan
Grade: 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the importance of efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and sustainability
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the differences between efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and sustainability.
  • Explain how each concept contributes to cost control, goal achievement, growth and long‑term viability.
  • Analyse the inter‑relationships between the four concepts using real‑world examples.
  • Apply basic formulas to calculate efficiency, effectiveness and productivity for a given scenario.
  • Evaluate the trade‑offs when integrating sustainability into operational decisions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with key formulas and comparative table
  • Case‑study worksheet (apparel manufacturer example)
  • Calculator or spreadsheet software
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What does doing a job well mean to you?” Capture responses and link them to business operations. Recall previous lessons on cost control and goal setting, showing how today’s concepts build on that knowledge. Explain that by the end of the lesson students will differentiate and apply efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and sustainability in real business contexts.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write definitions for the four concepts on sticky notes and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – Present key concepts, formulas, and the comparative table using the projector.
  3. Guided practice (10’) – Calculate efficiency, effectiveness and productivity from a simple dataset on the handout.
  4. Case‑study analysis (15’) – In pairs, examine the apparel manufacturer example, identify improvements in each concept and discuss trade‑offs.
  5. Inter‑relationship activity (10’) – Groups place examples on a Venn diagram on the whiteboard to show overlaps.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz (Kahoot or show of hands) on key definitions and formulas.
  7. Summary & exit ticket (5’) – Students write one actionable way a business could improve sustainability without sacrificing efficiency.
Conclusion:
Summarise how balancing efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and sustainability creates a resilient operation. Invite a few students to share an insight they will apply in future projects. Collect exit tickets and assign homework: research a company’s sustainability report and identify how it impacts the other three concepts.
