Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: why some organisations are structured by product and others by function or geographical area
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the three main organisational structures (functional, product/divisional, geographical) and their key characteristics.
  • Explain why organisations choose each structure, linking to market needs, efficiency and regional considerations.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each structure and recommend suitable structures for different business contexts.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck with structure diagrams
  • Handout comparing functional, product and geographical structures
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for group activity
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “How is your favourite brand organised?” Use the responses to connect to students’ existing ideas about departments. Explain that today we will investigate why firms adopt product, functional or geographical structures and what success looks like – students will be able to describe, explain and evaluate each.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students match real‑world examples to functional, product or geographical structures on a worksheet.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present definitions and a visual diagram of the three structures, highlighting key features.
  3. Guided analysis (10’) – Using the comparison table, discuss advantages and disadvantages; teacher asks probing questions.
  4. Group activity (15’) – In small groups, analyse a case study and decide which structure best fits the company; justify using sticky notes.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (10’) – Groups share recommendations; teacher synthesises factors influencing structural choice.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Exit ticket: list one advantage of each structure and a situation where it is most appropriate.
Conclusion:

Recap that the choice of structure aligns with product diversity, market geography and strategic priorities. Collect exit tickets to confirm understanding, then assign homework: research a real company and write a brief paragraph explaining its organisational structure and why it fits the business.
