Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: internal and external recruitment
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key differences between internal and external recruitment methods.
  • Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of each recruitment source.
  • Compare internal vs. external recruitment using cost, time, talent pool, morale, cultural fit and innovation.
  • Apply the recruitment process steps to select an appropriate source for a given vacancy.
  • Evaluate factors influencing the choice of recruitment source and propose a recruitment plan.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the internal vs. external comparison table
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Laptop with internet access (for online job board examples)
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a brief news clip about a company’s recent hiring campaign to hook interest. Ask students what they already know about how organisations find new staff, linking to previous lessons on HRM. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to distinguish internal from external recruitment, weigh their pros and cons, and choose the most suitable source for a vacancy.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – quick quiz on recruitment definitions and why recruitment matters.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – present internal vs. external methods, highlighting key advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Group activity (15') – using the handout, students fill a Venn diagram comparing the two sources and discuss findings.
  4. Case‑study work (15') – each group receives a vacancy scenario and decides whether to recruit internally or externally, justifying the choice with the six influencing factors.
  5. Process flowchart (10') – teacher models the recruitment‑selection process, students label where internal and external routes diverge and converge.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – exit ticket: write one advantage of internal recruitment and one advantage of external recruitment.
Conclusion:

Recap the main differences, advantages and disadvantages of internal and external recruitment and how the choice aligns with organisational goals. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, then assign homework: each student researches a real company’s recruitment strategy and prepares a short summary of whether they use mainly internal, external or mixed sources and why.
