Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Media Studies
Lesson Topic: Changing media environments
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key technological, economic, social and regulatory drivers of change in media environments.
  • Analyse how convergence and disintermediation reshape production, distribution and consumption processes.
  • Evaluate the impact of emerging technologies (AI, VR/AR, blockchain) on the roles of media professionals.
  • Compare traditional and new media business models using real‑world case studies.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides and video clip
  • Internet access for streaming examples
  • Printed handouts of case‑study summaries (Netflix, TikTok, mobile news)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Digital analytics dashboard screenshot (YouTube metrics)
  • Worksheet for transmedia story planning
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing the evolution from broadcast TV to a streaming interface, prompting students to consider how their viewing habits have changed. Ask learners to recall previous lessons on media production and distribution. Explain that today they will identify the forces reshaping media environments and be able to assess their implications. Success will be demonstrated through a transmedia story prototype and a brief class debate.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three ways they consume media today versus five years ago.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – Overview of key definitions and drivers of change using slides.
  3. Case‑study analysis (20’) – In groups, examine a provided case (e.g., Netflix or TikTok) and complete a comparison chart of production, distribution and revenue models.
  4. Transmedia activity (20’) – Groups design a brief transmedia story spanning a blog post, Instagram Reel, and podcast episode; outline platforms, audience and narrative links.
  5. Data insight (10’) – Review a YouTube analytics screenshot; discuss how metrics inform content decisions.
  6. Whole‑class debate (10’) – Prompt: “Streaming services enhance cultural diversity.” Students argue using evidence from the case studies.
  7. Summary & exit ticket (5’) – Recap main points; students write one new insight and one lingering question on an exit slip.
Conclusion:
Recap how technological, economic, social and regulatory forces intersect to reshape media production, distribution and consumption. Collect exit tickets where students note a key impact of convergence and a question for further study. For homework, assign a brief research task on a recent regulatory change affecting a digital platform, to be presented in the next lesson.
