Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Media Studies
Lesson Topic: Film
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and explain key film‑language terms (shot, angle, lighting, editing, sound, mise‑en‑scene).
  • Analyse a film’s narrative structure using the three‑act model and recognise alternative structures.
  • Compare genre conventions and evaluate how they shape audience expectations.
  • Apply at least one critical framework (e.g., formalism, cultural studies) to a film text in written analysis.
  • Construct a concise, evidence‑based essay using appropriate terminology and specific film examples.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer with internet access
  • Short film clips (selected for genre and technique variety)
  • Handout of film‑language table
  • Worksheet for clip analysis
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for Do‑Now
Introduction:

Begin with a 30‑second montage of striking film shots to spark curiosity. Ask students what visual and auditory cues they noticed, linking to prior knowledge of basic film terms. Explain that today they will master the language of film, analyse narrative and genre, and practise using a critical framework to produce a focused essay.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students write on sticky notes any film‑language terms they recall; share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present key film‑language concepts and the three‑act narrative model with slide examples.
  3. Clip Analysis (15') – In pairs, watch a 2‑minute clip; fill worksheet identifying shots, angles, lighting, sound, and genre conventions.
  4. Critical Framework Exercise (10') – Each pair chooses a framework (e.g., formalism or cultural studies) and writes a short paragraph linking the clip’s techniques to the theory.
  5. Essay Planning (10') – Individually outline a 500‑word response to a sample exam question, incorporating terminology and evidence gathered.
  6. Plenary & Exit Ticket (5') – Recap main points; students submit one film term with its function as an exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Summarise how precise film language and critical frameworks enhance analysis and essay quality. Collect exit tickets and remind students to finish their essay outlines for homework, reading a suggested chapter from *Film Art* to deepen understanding of genre conventions.
