Lesson Topic: tangible and intangible attributes of products
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the tangible and intangible attributes of a product.
  • Compare how each type of attribute influences pricing and product differentiation.
  • Analyse product‑design decisions that involve both tangible and intangible elements.
  • Evaluate the role of intangible attributes in creating a competitive advantage.
Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout with attribute tables
  • Physical product samples (e.g., a smartphone)
  • Venn‑diagram worksheet
  • Sticky notes and pens
  • Quick‑quiz cards or Kahoot access
Introduction:

Begin by asking students to think of a product they love and list what they can see versus what they feel about it. Review the previous lesson on the marketing mix to activate prior knowledge. Explain that by the end of the session they will be able to identify and explain both tangible and intangible product attributes.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write tangible and intangible features of a familiar product on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define product, tangible attributes, intangible attributes; show slide examples.
  3. Group comparison activity (10'): Complete the provided comparison table and discuss differences.
  4. Case‑study analysis (15'): In small groups examine product‑design decisions (design, packaging, branding, warranty) and classify the attributes involved.
  5. Venn‑diagram creation (10'): Groups draw a Venn diagram linking tangible and intangible attributes to overall product value.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Quick quiz or exit ticket to confirm key concepts.
Conclusion:

Summarise how both tangible and intangible attributes shape product strategy and customer perception. Collect exit tickets where each student records one tangible and one intangible attribute of a product of their choice. For homework, students research a product and write a brief analysis of its tangible and intangible attributes and how they influence pricing.
