Grade: A‑Level Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Sociology
Lesson Topic: Social identity and change
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key concepts of social identity and identity change.
  • Compare at least two theoretical perspectives on social identity (e.g., Social Identity Theory and Symbolic Interactionism).
  • Analyse how agents of socialisation shape identity formation with concrete examples.
  • Evaluate the influence of contemporary processes such as globalisation and digital media on identity change.
  • Apply sociological theory to a case study (e.g., identity in the gig economy).
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides with definitions and theory table
  • Handout containing key definitions and a simplified theory comparison table
  • Case‑study worksheet (gig‑economy youth)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Short video clip on digital identities
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What is one thing about yourself that you show online but not in person?” Use the responses to hook students into the idea of multiple selves. Briefly recall previous lessons on socialisation and set out the success criteria – students will be able to define key terms, compare theories, and apply them to real‑world examples.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write two sentences describing their offline and online identities; share a few examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15’) – Present definitions of social identity, identity change, and an overview of five theories using slides.
  3. Group analysis (20’) – In pairs, students work through the gig‑economy case study worksheet, identifying agents of socialisation and processes of identity change.
  4. Comparative table activity (15’) – Teams fill a simplified version of the theory table, then discuss similarities and differences.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (10’) – Evaluate strengths and limitations of the theories, referencing the empirical studies from the notes.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one sentence answering: “Which contemporary factor most influences identity change today and why?”
Conclusion:

Summarise how agents of socialisation and macro‑processes interact to reshape identity, linking back to the opening poll. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: a 300‑word essay linking identity change to globalisation or digital media, using at least one theoretical perspective.
