| Lesson Topic: the purpose of business activity |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the main purposes of business activity, including profit, growth, employment, innovation and social responsibility.
- Explain how different stakeholder groups shape a business’s purpose.
- Compare profit‑oriented, non‑profit and social enterprises in terms of purpose and outcomes.
- Analyse how a defined purpose influences strategic choices such as market positioning and resource allocation.
- Evaluate the role of purpose in decision‑making and sustainability.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and laptop for slides
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed stakeholder‑purpose handout
- Case‑study worksheets (profit‑oriented vs social enterprise)
- Diagram template of business purpose
- Kahoot/exit‑ticket cards
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “Why do you think businesses exist?” Capture a few ideas on the board, linking them to students’ everyday experiences. Review prior knowledge of profit and ask learners to predict other possible purposes. State the success criteria: students will be able to identify multiple purposes, link them to stakeholder interests, and explain strategic implications.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5’) – Students list reasons businesses exist, then share in pairs. Teacher collects key ideas.
- Mini‑lecture & Diagram (10’) – Present the five core purposes with a central flowchart; highlight stakeholder perspectives.
- Stakeholder Activity (15’) – In groups, students complete a purpose‑impact chart using the provided stakeholder table; brief class debrief.
- Case‑Study Comparison (15’) – Analyse a profit‑oriented firm vs a social enterprise; discuss how purpose drives strategy (positioning, innovation, growth).
- Consolidation Quiz (5’) – Kahoot/exit ticket where each student names one purpose and a related strategic decision.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the multiple purposes of business activity and how they connect to stakeholder expectations and strategic choices. Students complete an exit ticket summarising one purpose and its impact on a real‑world business. For homework, each learner selects a local business and writes a brief paragraph describing its primary purpose and evidence of that purpose in its operations.
