Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: Boston Matrix analysis and its uses
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the two axes of the Boston (BCG) Matrix and the four quadrants.
  • Calculate relative market share and interpret market‑growth rates.
  • Construct a Boston Matrix for a given product portfolio.
  • Analyse strategic recommendations for each quadrant.
  • Evaluate the advantages and limitations of the matrix for business decision‑making.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck on Boston Matrix concepts
  • Handout with BCG matrix template and sample data
  • Calculators
  • Markers and large grid paper for group activity
  • Access to market data (printed or digital)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “If you had £1 million to invest in your company’s products, where would you put it?” This connects to prior learning about market share and growth. Review the definitions of market growth rate and relative market share, then set the success criteria: students will be able to plot products on a Boston Matrix and justify strategic actions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Short quiz on market‑share vs. market‑growth concepts.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Explain the two axes, the four quadrants, and show the TechCo example.
  3. Guided practice (15’) – Calculate relative market share for each TechCo product and plot them on a printed matrix.
  4. Group activity (15’) – Teams create a BCG matrix for a product line of their choice, decide on strategic recommendations, and prepare a brief presentation.
  5. Class discussion (10’) – Compare group matrices, highlight advantages and limitations of the tool.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one strategic action you would take for a product in the “Question Mark” quadrant.
Conclusion:

Recap the key steps of constructing a Boston Matrix and the strategic implications of each quadrant. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a homework task: analyse a real‑world brand’s product portfolio using the BCG matrix and prepare a one‑page report.
