Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the difference between one-way and two-way communication and between vertical and horizontal communication
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key features of one‑way and two‑way communication.
  • Explain how vertical and horizontal communication differ in purpose and direction.
  • Analyse situations to choose the most appropriate communication channel.
  • Apply practical tips to improve both one‑way and two‑way communication in a business setting.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts of comparison tables
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Digital presentation (PowerPoint/Google Slides)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick video clip showing a chaotic office meeting versus a clear announcement. Ask students to recall a recent communication they experienced at work or school and identify whether it was one‑way or two‑way. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to distinguish these modes and select the right channel for different business situations.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write on sticky notes one example of one‑way communication they have seen; share briefly.
  2. Direct Instruction (10'): Present definitions and key differences using slides and the comparison tables.
  3. Guided Practice (12'): In pairs, analyse a case study and label each communication instance as one‑way/two‑way and vertical/horizontal.
  4. Whole‑Class Debrief (8'): Groups report findings; teacher clarifies misconceptions.
  5. Application Activity (10'): Students design a short communication plan for a fictional product launch, choosing appropriate channels.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Quick quiz (Kahoot or hand‑raised) on terminology.
Conclusion:
Recap the four communication types and the situations where each is most effective. Have students complete an exit ticket: “Name one scenario where you would use vertical one‑way communication and one where you would use horizontal two‑way communication.” Assign a brief homework: draft a memo (one‑way) and a feedback email (two‑way) for a given scenario.
