Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: barriers to communication and how to overcome them
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the five main types of communication barriers in a business context.
  • Evaluate the impact of each barrier on organisational performance.
  • Propose practical strategies to overcome specific barriers.
  • Apply a step‑by‑step process to analyse and resolve a communication problem.
  • Use a simple formula to measure improvement in communication accuracy.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of barrier table
  • Case‑study worksheet (Company X example)
  • Glossary sheet of business terms
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What cost a business when a message is misunderstood?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of basic communication models. Explain that today they will learn to spot common barriers and develop concrete solutions, which will be assessed through a case analysis and an exit ticket.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write down a recent miscommunication they have witnessed and share briefly (checks prior knowledge).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the five barrier types with real‑world examples using slides.
  3. Group case study (15’) – In teams, analyse the Company X scenario, identify the barrier, and complete the worksheet.
  4. Strategy brainstorm (10’) – Each group proposes two practical strategies to overcome the identified barrier; ideas are recorded on the whiteboard.
  5. Process simulation (10’) – Whole class works through the Identify → Analyse → Plan → Implement → Review cycle with a new short scenario.
  6. Quick quiz / exit ticket (5’) – Three short questions recap key concepts; students submit one actionable step they will try in their own work.
Conclusion:

Summarise the five barrier categories and the key strategies discussed. Collect the exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign homework: each student creates a personal action plan to address one communication barrier they encounter in daily life.
