| Lesson Topic: the meaning and purpose of strategic management: analysis, choice and implementation |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the purpose and key components of strategic management.
- Analyse internal and external environments using tools such as SWOT, PESTLE and Porter’s Five Forces.
- Evaluate strategic options using Porter’s generic strategies, the Ansoff matrix and weighted scoring.
- Explain how organisational structure, culture and resource allocation support implementation.
- Apply a balanced scorecard framework to monitor strategic performance.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed handouts of analysis tool templates (PESTLE, SWOT, VRIO)
- Worksheet with case study for group activity
- Calculator or spreadsheet software for weighted scoring
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What do you think guides a company’s long‑term decisions?” Connect to prior learning on business objectives and outline that today they will uncover how strategic management provides a systematic framework. Success criteria: students will be able to analyse, choose and outline implementation steps for a strategy.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5’) – Students write a brief definition of strategic management on sticky notes; share and refine as a class.
- Mini‑lecture (10’) – Explain meaning, purpose and the three stages; illustrate with a flowchart.
- Analysis activity (15’) – In groups, use PESTLE and SWOT templates on a provided case; produce a concise matrix.
- Choice workshop (12’) – Apply Porter’s generic strategies and the Ansoff matrix to the case; each group selects one strategic option and justifies it using a weighted scoring model.
- Implementation planning (10’) – Discuss structure, culture and resource needs; groups outline a simple implementation plan and identify one KPI for a balanced scorecard.
- Check for understanding (5’) – Whole‑class quiz via Kahoot or hand‑raise to confirm key concepts.
- Recap & exit ticket (3’) – Students write one thing they learned and one question they still have.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how strategic analysis informs choice and how implementation links back to the original analysis. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework: complete a weighted scoring sheet for a different business scenario. Remind students to review the revision checklist before the next lesson.
