Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the role of entrepreneurship in creating and starting up a business
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the role of entrepreneurs in creating and launching new businesses.
  • Explain the differences between entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs and their impact on innovation.
  • Analyse the stages of the entrepreneurial process and identify key activities at each stage.
  • Evaluate the advantages and challenges faced by entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs.
  • Apply the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs/intrapreneurs to real‑world case examples.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for slides/diagrams
  • Printed handouts of the entrepreneurial process flowchart
  • Case study worksheets (EcoBrew & intrapreneur example)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for idea‑generation activity
  • Laptop with internet access for quick research
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: how many students know someone who started their own business? Connect this to prior knowledge of market opportunities and set the success criteria – by the end of the lesson you will be able to describe the entrepreneur’s role, differentiate it from intrapreneurship, and map the start‑up process.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write on sticky notes one product they think could fill a market gap and share briefly (engagement).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present definitions of entrepreneur and intrapreneur and compare them using a slide table (knowledge).
  3. Interactive activity (12'): In groups, map the six stages of the entrepreneurial process on a handout flowchart, placing their sticky‑note ideas into the appropriate stages (application).
  4. Case study analysis (10'): Groups examine the EcoBrew and intrapreneur examples, answering guided questions on advantages, challenges, and characteristics (analysis).
  5. Whole‑class discussion (8'): Compare findings, highlight key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs/intrapreneurs (synthesis).
  6. Quick quiz (5'): Kahoot or exit‑ticket with three questions to check understanding (evaluation).
Conclusion:

Summarise that entrepreneurship drives economic growth by turning opportunities into businesses, while intrapreneurship innovates within existing firms. Ask students to write one takeaway on a sticky note as an exit ticket. For homework, research a local start‑up and prepare a brief paragraph describing its entrepreneurial process.
