Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: how a business and its stakeholders may use an environmental audit
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and key stages of an environmental audit.
  • Explain how internal and external stakeholders use audit findings to inform decisions.
  • Analyse a sample audit checklist to identify compliance gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of environmental audits for business performance.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides summarising audit stages
  • Printed sample audit checklist (energy, waste, emissions, supply chain)
  • Worksheet for group analysis
  • Kahoot quiz access (or similar) for quick check
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a factory’s waste reduction after an audit, then ask students what they think an environmental audit involves. Link to prior knowledge of compliance and CSR, and state that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map the audit process and explain stakeholder uses.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Think‑pair‑share – “What would you check first if you were auditing a business’s environmental impact?”
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of audit purpose, stages, and stakeholder groups using slides.
  3. Group activity (15'): Analyse the printed audit checklist, identify gaps, and propose one improvement per area.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Share group findings; map how management, regulators, investors, customers and the community use the results.
  5. Case‑study review (10'): Brief examination of a real‑world example where an audit led to cost savings and brand enhancement.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Kahoot quiz covering key concepts and terminology.
Conclusion:
Summarise the audit process and its strategic value, highlighting the link between compliance, cost efficiency and reputation. Students complete an exit ticket stating one way a stakeholder they haven’t considered could benefit from an audit. Assign homework: research a recent news article on a company’s environmental audit and prepare a one‑page summary.
